my security or something else?

I have recently been having problems getting programs to load up. This all seemed to happen after defragging my harddrive last night. I went to load up microsoft visual studios and got an error. Since then I have had trouble loading up limewire and aim. Also, another random thing that has gone out is my help and support page which would allow me to restore this. Well, i scanned my computer using panda antivirus (really good) and came up with a few viruses. My question is what you guys think is causing the software to not load. It is still doing it even after disinfecting my computer of viruses. This is very weird nonetheless.

You should also try adaware spyware remover. Spyware is hitting people a lot harder everyday then viruses... It is free so go check it out. If not you can try restore, if you use it!

see that's the thing... i use microsoft antispyware which works okay. I haven't had many problems with ad aware recently, and also i can't access a restore to a previous date. I don't want to have to restore it back to factory settings using a disk either.

Why don't you try scan disk? This might show some errors if any on your drive which cause your programs not to work correctly.

Consider un-installing the programs that are not working and re-install them once again, this might help.

Most probably this will not be a disk problem, it migh be a windows problem, simply you will need to restore the computer factory settings using the Disk or CD supplied with your computer, or you will have to re-install windows from scratch. Sometimes, programs crash due to windows and not because they crashed.

yeah, i'm thinking it's windows now. I just don't want to break down and restore it again. I guess this means it's time to switch os's. I've tried scanning the disks and it came out fine. The software has crashed I'm guessing because I get random errors even when I try to uninstall microsoft visual studios. Thanks for the advice though guys. This forums is a pretty good place to go with questions.

Some times you might have to re-format if thats the case. I suggest you do it as this can save you a lot more money that switching OS's

i'm currently using microsoft xp home which is crap and want to switch to mandrake(linux) because i hear it's good for beginners.

If you plan to play games on your computer please make sure that the games are compatiable with Linux because not all games are. And dont buy any more office products and you will have to download Linux versions of things.
Personally I cant be bothered switching OS's and theres not much point

Are you trying to load 6.0 or .net 2003?

In my opinion (which means less and less everyday... ...) ANY Linux flavor you pick might not be the best thing for beginners. All the "bugs" that Windows brings is offset by how easy it is to use. On the other hand setting up Linux is not incredibly difficult.. but it certainly is not EASY for a beginner. Added to the mix is the fact that there is still a limit to the number of application Linux will run... and windows emulators are still slow.
