hi everyone basically i need some quality advice,

i moved from tiscali to bt september 06 which was a nightmare but still, i am paying bt 54 pounds a month for there top package , ihave a bt home hub phone ect up to 8mb bla bla bla bla. the reason i need your help is i was only receiving a quarter of a meg speed for 5 months so i phoned there help desk ( at 25p a min) no exsageration about 20 times in one week trying to tell the person on the other end what was happening. in the end and after following all the bloody troubleshootin guides that they were giving me it never worked. so eventually they gave in and sent a bt engineer to my house he was there about 30 mins and orderd a b razzz reset whatever that means over his mobile. 2 days past no change then suddenly i was getting 3.5 meg which i was more than happy with, low and behold i received a call from a women from bt saying can the case be closed now that the problem is solved. happy with my new speed i agreed, next day BANG down to quarter meg again i refuse to ring them AGAIN and go through all that shite. was it a coincidence she phoned closed the case then i went back down to a quarter meg. please guys if u could save me from ringing the useless helpdesk again i will be eternally gratefull. i dont think it has anythin to do with the exchange cause i live about 5 mins down the road from it . PLEASE SUGGESTIONS NEEDED

It sounds to me like you have a shotty modem in a way. Try to ping them and see what kidn of response times you are getting. It might be the company too i dont know about them since i'm not in the UK but there are companies here in the us that have that same issue.

the key word in all of BT's packages now is "up to" , they never state you can get 8mb, or anywhere near 8mb...

They use a system called ADSL Max, it's a fully automated system that sits there and constantly tests your line while you're using it, usually over a long period of time, say 2-3 weeks, after that time (sometimes called your settling time) you're line speed becomes fixed to whatever the ADSL Max system thinks your line and hardware can best work with...

At best it's a shoddy system, it doesnt work yet 99.9% of all exchanges have this system in place and almost ALL ISP's that rent the lines from BT adopt ADSL Max instead of having fixed speed lines (like the old style 2Mb and 4Mb lines)

I am in the exact same boat as you, there is almost nothing you can do at all, and nothing BT can do either... ADSL Max is quite possibly the worst thing I've ever had to deal with, constantly i receive speeds of at and below 100Kbps and yes, i am on the "Up To 8Mb" service, i used to have a fixed line at 2Mb, and would receive about 2.4-2.6Mb because im fairly close to the exchange.

I honestly do hate it, and i feel for anyone else who has to deal with it. In this day and age you come to expect and REQUIRE a certain speed, things just dont happen without a fiarly fast connection, being crippled to nearing 56k dialup speeds for 3 weeks out of every month is not something i can agree with
