my touchpad stopped working/a virus?

so the buttons are working but general touch area not responding.
it started this morning when mse window popped up asking me to
update, and damnit i dont know why i clicked yes knowing that mse
updates automatically, and i had similar experience but with a different
antivirus years ago, ive forgotten about that.im quite sure its one of
viruses/trojans that are dislplaying fake update messages.
also my laptop is running a bit slower than usual
tried uninstalling/installing the driver
tried system restore..
i scanned the whole computer, it lasted 8 hours with 100%cpu usage
and normally it would last max. 1 hour
its a standard dell touchpad.system is windows vista home 32bit SP2
what can i do?

It could be infected but I don't see malware disabling the touchpad.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If for some reason Malwarebytes will not install or run please download and run Rkill.scr, Rkill.exe, or Rkill.com but DO NOT reboot the system and then try installing or running Malwarebytes. If Rkill (which is a black box) appears and then disappears right away or you get a message saying rkill is infected, keep trying to run rkill until it over powers the infection and temporarily kills it. Once a log appears on the screen, you can try running malwarebytes or downloading other programs.

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

Maybe you disabled the touch pad somehow. There is a key combination to disable/re-enable it: like Fn and F7. You could also go into control panel and see if there are any options there for the touch-pad that you can change. There may also be options to disable/ enable the touch pad in BIOS, but I'm not sure. Apparently if your finger is wet the touch pad won't work, but I don't think that's the case here.

OK, thanks for a quick response guys
ill try to download these files, its a torture browsing with just
a keyboard, i will try to respond soon

ok, so i downloaded antimalware, updated it and scanned the computer,
it found some infected files, going to restart now, hopefully the touchpad
will work

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.

In your next reply please post:
  • The ComboFix log
  • A fresh HiJackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running

well the mse update still shows up,sometimes
i also get the message that windows has blocked
some startup programs, will investigate this unfotunately
i cant access some of the programs on the right side of the

so my question is should i delete any hijackthis items, or let them be?
i dont want to take it to service 'cause they probably reinstall the system, and i lose
all my data :(

I don't see anything that could be causing the issue. Your microsoft security essentials is outdated though per the combofix log. You can try doing a system restore back to when the touchpad was working but then you'll have to rescan your system with malwarebytes.

I ran malwarebytes again but in a full scan mode and it found 1 infected file(still running)
if a virus is causing all those annomalies this might solve the problem
but its a big 'if' its probably something related to hardware
i hope i still have the warranty, eh.

hmm, i updated microsoft security essentials but the message about updating
still pops up now and again.also windows defender doesnt work for some reason. what could this be?

Open up microsoft security essentials and see what the update status says. Does it say its updated to todays date?

Does windows defender even open? I need more info.

i doesnt work at all
windows defender has encountered an error0x800106b5
...and some standard windows information
i did some google research and aparrently its something to
do with old signatures or smth.
and mse just wants me to download updates all the time,
even if i updated it multiple times.
no malvare or any viruses.(detected)
maybe the laptop is just too old and needs to be checked out.
anyway thx for help
