My whole computer is "skipping"

So, sometimes my computer skips. By this i mean that if i were to move the mouse constantly, it would skip or pause every second or so. what is going on here?? It only happens sometimes...

right now i have 44 processes running. itunes and mozilla. is this too many random little processes?? how can i keep that low without deleting them every time i start my comp.

i have a 4 1/2 year old emachines laptop.

im on xp, 2004.

SPECS

CPU: mobile amd athalon 64 processor 3200+
2.0 GHz, 512MB RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon 9600/9700 series

what else do u need?? how do i get it??
 
do you have the latest graphics drivers installed.... i had this same problem on my desktop before i installed the nvidia drivers then everything was smooth
