my XP computer can't find drivers

When I try to connect/add a new device (scanner, videocam, scanner) via fire wire or USB, I am told that I do not need a driver as my Windows XP supposedly already has the driver. I then continue to get the message that the driver is not available.

"The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)"

"To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver"

I then click Reinstall and get this message...

Cannot Install this Hardware
The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software.

Any suggestions?

You need to go To the MFG. website for what ever you trying to install and look for the drivers download section under Support.

What exactly are you trying to connect that giving you the error?

Type, Model#, ..etc

also you may want to go to system in control panel , then hardware then devices... se if there are any unknown devices, or in the usb section, any unknown devices. Sometimes drivers can negotiate with these during a reinstall , most of the time they can not and have to be removed.

I tried to install a new firewire port for a video camera a couple of weeks ago and had a similar unresolved issue... the computer ran fine. Now I am trying to connect a Plextor PX-716UF and an Epsom Perfection Scanner 3170.

In the device manager, the IEEE firewire, Epsom Scanner, and Plextor (shown as USB storage device) are displayed under ‘other devices’ and each has a yellow question mark to the left of it. When I right click any of them and try to update driver, after a few moments I get the message
“Cannot Install this Hardware
The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software”

Check the EPP setting in the bios, I changed mine once not knowing what it did to try to get something else working, and my printer and scanner quit working. Without rebooting I don't recall what they should be set to.
