Mystery disc fillage

Hello - here's a puzzler

I have an 18.9GB slave drive in my desktop, and when I check its contents by adding up the size of each file, it tells me I've got 6.17GB of files, which leaves me with 12.73 GB of free space.
When I hover the mouse pointer over the disc icon in 'My Computer', however, it's a different story. It says that I only have 4.66GB free, which is one big discrepancy! - and not caused by hidden files (at least not ones that appear using the "show hidden files" command).
The disc in question used to be my main drive, so it had Windows XP and all the associated files on it - I've removed these, however, so I'm wonderiing if some "ghosts" get left behind that are invisible by normal methods?

any ideas?
Cliff

If you can move the stuff on the drive to anther HDD or something I would format the HDD. There may be files Windows used that are still mapped. A format should remedy that.
