Name that laptop issue!

Ok a friend brought me her moms laptop that BSOD'd the other night and now when it turns on it says 'operating system not found'

I got the recovery disc and tried to boot from that but it comes up and says 'media test failure: check cable' and 'non-system cd' and wont go any farther.

I first thought it was a hdd fried but would that prevent booting from the cd rom drive? You can here the disc spin but it wont do anything... what else could it be?

well i say the hard drive died, and yes the CD drive would still work, how old is the laptop??? what brand of laptop is it?

Its an emachines laptop, probably 4years old. So if he hdd wa bad, itwould cause the cd-rom drive to stop working?
