hi people
whats the difference between a NAS and a DAS basically i want a hard drive for my laptop and if possible i want to connect it to my router so my family can use it aswell

some details on NAS - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_Attached_Storage

some details on DAS - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_Attached_Storage

basically, what you described mixes the two concepts together, you cannot have a NAS drive that you can then attatch to your laptop, you can have a NAS drive and connect to it via your laptop, just as any other person on the network can....

As with DAS, you can have it on your laptop, and you can mark it as shared withing windows, then it would be a shared network drive, only accessible when your laptop is on and functioning.

you cant mix them both together, doesnt work (not to my knowledge anyway)
