If you were able to end it from being active the next step would simply be to give it a big "goodbye" when you send it on it's way to oblivion. Once that is gone you simply hit the fix button in HT for the others remaining to see if they get booted out! Unlike the others however this one is a self contained executable named ALCXMNTR.EXE that you want gone.

I went into Hijackthis and did another scan, ticked the four items on your list and pressed Fix checked, I noticed the ALCXMNTR.EXE was still there. hear are the results.

The last one is optional since it is simply an unknown in the HT data base.

The only other items of concern would be the Google updater service that usually is seen as an option when installing different softwares. The items here are directly part of the Google toolbar you have running and are not any specific problem but leave doors open for adwares and a few other things.

To see a drastic reduction in adwares, spybots, popup ads, and other crap I can point at an alternative toolbar that combines other search engines along with just the Google and proves more effective. The plain wrapper version of the InfoSpace toolbar is free at http://www.givingfree.com/ShowProduct.asp?id=6478

The ABCNews version is found at http://www.infospace.com/info.abcnws/tbar

I'm still looking for a way to get this version running on Firefox 2.0 so I can use that as the default browser along with having combined search engines!

Thanks for all your help on this PC eye I really appreciate it !

I just finished Hijacking the four 09s and the 04 from your list, my next effort will be the google toolbar thing, the only reason I have that is for easy access to google as well as the spell check. I just noticed today the google updater appeared on the task bar. also noticed the ALCXMNTR.EXE showed up again so I gave it the boot in task manager. I'll post another log and check into the alternative toolbars you mentioned, thanks for those too.

Realtek AC 97's data collector is back again I see. "C:\WINDOWS\ALCXMNTR.EXE" This one you should try fixing. But you most likely want to boot in safe mode for manual deletion if you can't end the process. This is used by Realtek to collect information on customers.

When you first turn on the system and watch the initial brand logo(if enabled by default in the system bios) or the post tests and listing of drives you simply press the F8 key right as Windows starts to load. If you press that too soon and the board also has an F8 boot menu to select the drive to boot from you will see the worng screen there.

Once in the Windows boot menu you simply scroll to the safe mode option to see Windows load with a bare minimum of defaults loaded. The right click option won't be available on the mouse there. But you can drag it into the recycle bin and then empty that.

I went into safe mode and deleted the ALCXMNTR.EXE. next time I need to do work in safe mode I hope I have some kind of desktop recovery program ! here's an up to date Hijack log.

That's why you save a desktop theme in the display properties to reload the desktop with the icons were they were previously seen. :p I've been that a few times over the years. Simply reposition them were they has been, save a custom theme in the desktop properties, and log off. That will set them inplace without a full reboot of the system. Your log is whisper clean with no bugs to report. But you can still have someone else review it.

Hey that's great news ! I thought we had so much more work to do haha, I still have that google toolbar to get rid of and then install one of the ones you mentioned earlier, but that'll have to wait for now, yeah it must have taken me three hours to get my desktop back the way it was lol, I'm a real desktop "Linkhog" must have close to a hundred links ! so many I've removed the actual icon's themselves and disabled the grid to make enough room. at least I printed a screenshot.

Now I'll be looking into saving a desktop theme like you say, that'll make life easier. thank you so much for all your help PC eye, great stuff !

The infospace toolbar gives you the advantage of finding things faster with the combinations of search engines along with a section for shopping site when going to find the best price on something. That can also make life easier then relying on one search engine for everything. And you don't get anywhere near as much adwares. :eek: That and a good popup ad blocker is a plus. :D If you need a toolbar go with something better then...

Right click also won't work on that screen.

Google, Yahoo, and others seem to bypass the default security measures seen in IE. This is one reason why I suggested going with the Infospace bar over these other adware infested wonders you often see even when installing a new program. Your own browsing habits can also play a role as well.

The only the log shows here is Google and AVG. And we know AVG isn't a source of problems. The first thing to do would be to remove the Google toolbar and perhaps even reinstall IE 6 or download IE 7 now with the higher security seen in it. For a better less adware vulnerable toolbar, http://www.infospace.com/home/tbar/

IE 7 can be downloaded and saved for later installation once you remove Google and IE alike to insure a fresh clean install of IE 7. The newer browser includes an antiphising filter plus improved popup blocker. To read up on IE 7 you take at it seen here. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/default.mspx

As for the problem with internet explorer and the screen shot I posted, I right clicked on the internet explorer icon, checked properties and clicked "Use Default" on Homepage. back to normal now ! :D

Something lowered the security settings in order to see that IE message come up on you like that. You'll like the popup blocker with the resettable counter built into it as well. None of them stop everything when the IE option is off. But you see less crud then with others. With that on you'll want to clean out your browser cache on a regular basis to keep the usual "data miners" at bay. Ad-Aware SE Personal soon to see a 2007 addition and Spyware Terminator are two good free programs you can download for this and other ??? "pests".
