im planning on selling my old 754 mobo and getting a 939 and dual core proc.

i need to know if i NEED athlon 64 X2 native compatibility, or can i update the bios once i reformat (which im also planning on doing along with the upgrade)

basically, will the X2 work with the motherboard until i can update the bios?
thanks for any help, much appreciated.

Which motherboard are you talking about? I believe some/most of the newer ones will have native X2 support, while the older ones will require a BIOS flash.

If it has native X2 support I don't see any reason to flash the BIOS once you get your system up and runnin'. Again, let us know which MOBO you're looking at, and we'll try to find out for you.

Actually Newegg doesn't even mention anything about X2 compatibility, however, if you look at the box it states in the bottom right hand corner (and in X-TREME lettering :P) "Dual Core". ECS made a KN1 Extreme board that was the predecessor to the KN1 SLI Extreme, and that one didn't have native X2 support, but all of the KN1 SLI Extreme boards come with native dual core support.

Go for it :)

as far as im aware all 939 boards are x2 compatable, however some boards do require a bios update.
also, if the board you choose doesn't support x2 it will work as a single core until you upgrade the bios to support x2

yea i bought it! im glad i did! now... soo... i oced hypertransport to 1.2ghz... wow this mobo rules... only thing i cant do is turn cpu multiplier down! oh well, thats just less options and i got a sweet rig already anyways
