can someone find me a link from somewhere in the us where i can find a 1gb. stick for the best price around? i really need it, since i'm getting far-cry, the hardest hitting game i'll own, besides f.e.a.r., which barely runs

That will depend on the type of memory used. Your signature besides being too light in color to read clearly doesn't show the make and model board along with not iding the type of memory you are looking for. One popular site for ordering hardwares including memory is at http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?N=2010170147+1052307858&Submit=ENE&SubCategory=147

By simply entering the type of memory like PC3200 DDR400 or DDR2 types in a search engine you can also browse through shopping.com, nextag.com, and some others to compare prices at various vendors.

A online store, or a retail store?

From ebay this is a fairly decent price with decent ram, for 48$, shipping is a little high.

OR Frys Electronics normally has fairly good deals on...pretty much anything, just wait for there ad's and get a specail.

[edit:since he has a A64 its going to be DDR, not SD nor DDR2, as far as I know the only thing that is supproted and used with a Athlon64 is DDR]

Some newer model Socket 939 boards use PC3400 DDR2 533mhz dimms. Not every S939 mb uses DDR400! Often dealers will sell off new hardwares on EBay. But you also have to set up an account in order to "bid" most of the time on items sold there. If you want a manufacturer's guarantee and performance memory you would pay more over some good rated value memory. If you plan to run the present 512mb memory along with a new 1gb dimm it will have to be the same type and even better buying the same brand.

are there any specific brands i should look for that are good and extremely reasonably priced?

cause my corsair was so expensive you wouldn't beleive

If you previously bought the Corsair xms series dimm the price is certainly higher then the value ram available. If you are running an Asus model board I could advise Kingston Value Ram for gaming since a pair of 1gb dimms has worked well on two different boards here with some newer games as well as some of the older ones. OCZ would be out for premium cost for premium memory. Crucial is another better name to consider as well. Do you have a price limit? That will help narrow down the options and brands as well.

my limit? around 75 dollars, well below anythng considerable that newegg has... should i go ahead and try the ram that arm_pit found?

I don't blame you there one bit. The 2gb of ram here was bought at a pc show for about $110. It's not 2gb of performance memory but plays games and run other large programs without seeing any trouble there. The link above is for one thing, "cheap memory"! or getting memory cheap. A good brand will see a higher price. For about the $75 mark you can also choose a good pair of 512mb dimms in a 1gb kit there unless you are planning to add a second 1gb dimm later. When adding memory you want to get them from the same batch if possible by the same manufacturer to see the best results.

ah! you saw right through my plan! i'm going to pawn off these two 265's and buy i 1gb. stick, so later on down the road i can buy another of the same.

btw, what does dimm mean??? only recently have i started hearing that

The word "dimm" is abreviated for "Dual Inline Memory Module". The definition for that is:

"DIMM
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

Two types of DIMMs: a 168-pin SDRAM module (top) and a 184-pin DDR SDRAM module (bottom).A DIMM, or dual in-line memory module comprises a series of random access memory integrated circuits. These modules are mounted on a printed circuit board and designed for use in personal computers. DIMMs began to replace SIMMs (single in-line memory modules) as the predominant type of memory module as Intel's Pentium processors began to control the market.

The main difference between SIMMs and DIMMs is that SIMMs have a 32-bit data path, while DIMMs have a 64-bit data path. Since Intel's Pentium has (as do several other processors) a 64-bit bus width, it required SIMMs installed in matched pairs in order to use them. The processor would then access the two SIMMs simultaneously. DIMMs were introduced to eliminate this inefficiency. Another difference is that DIMMs have separate electrical contacts on each side of the module, while the contacts on SIMMs on both sides are redundant." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIMM
