I have a Dell dimension L500r just kicken around, but its got a list of software problems and probly a few viruses. I was wondering if I should partition the hard drive and install a Linux operating system. Im suggesting Linux because the computer currently has Windows 2000nt and I dont care for it.

All of these are livecd's. They will run from your optical drive and ram without touching your hard drive at all. They are safe to use for those that want to explore without making a commitment.

My opinion, openSuSE is the best OS bar (including Windows) none. Sabayon is the most fun for a novice because it has everything you need (Nvidia and ATI drivers, audio & video codecs etc). You need a dvd drive for Sabayon though.
