Need a new hard drive...Help Transfering files.

Ok, i have a Dell Inpiron E1705 and the hard drive is getting old. I dont know what i did to it, but it doesnt like me, its slow and has lots of bad spots. I figured it would be easier just to replace it. i was wondering if i could just transfer all the files so i didnt have to go thru updating and downloading all the stuff i want. i have an external HD with enough space to put everything from the computer to the External HD. But once i get it to the external, how do i get it to the HD? without having 2 computeres? Thank you for your help.
 
I would first ask if you want a free solution or a paid for software that will do the job?

also.... which OS are you using?
 
I use XXclone for XP for making 100% disk copies . Assuming you have an external enclosure for a 2.5" HDD - Copy the image/clone to the new drive and then place that new drive into the Laptop and boot from it(basically follow the instructions in XXclone.)

As for paid option - I find that Acronis is VERY VERY GOOD at backups/cloning etc.
