Need a new mobo

I built my brothers computer like a year or two ago and his motherboard just died so I need to get him a new one. I can't remember what processor I put in it or what socket it is.

This is the motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...&cm_re=n82e16813128034-_-13-128-034-_-Product

It needs to have SATA, PCIe x16 slot, and PCI slot. I can figure all that out, but I don't want to order a replacement motherboard and not have the processor not fit or work.

So how can I choose a mobo for him? Is it like, as long as the mobo supports AM2 socket, then it will work, or is it...as long as the mobo supports Athlon 64 X2 / Athlon 64 / Sempron it will work. or do I HAVE to find out the processor?

Thanks much.

Well that's the thing, his computer won't start, the mobo doesn't do anything. Power supply is good, hard drive is good, video card is good. So I wouldn't be able to run that on his PC to figure out what processor he has. It's been so long since I've really messed with the inside of the computers and what not. Would the processor have any identifying marks on it?

Yeah, you would have to remove the heatsink and clean off the thermal paste to see the identification on it.

Well I have the processor in hand...

AMD Athlon 64 X2
ADA5000IAA5CS
CCBIF 0650UPMW
1556992L60746

and fuuuuu, I bent two pins on it, if I managed to get them straightened out, the processor should be alright?

You have an AM2 5000+ 2.6 ghz processor. How much money are you wanting to spend or budget do you have?

The motherboard was no more than like $100 when I bought the original one for him.

He's just got like a GeForce 7xxx and 2.5gb ram, just very non graphic intense games so I'm not looking for a whole lot, somewhere between 50-75$

Thanks for the help by the way.

Well motherboard came...I put everything back in the PC...I plug in the power cable into the power supply...the lights come on and the fans spin for maybe half a second then they all turn off and stop..like no more than half a second..

The power button/reset button don't do anything, nothing will power up at all..the only time the lights will come on is when I unplug the power supply and reconnect it..

I checked and I have the power switch/reset switch all hooked up correctly, I've doubled checked 1000 times. All the cables are in correctly...what could cause this?

Did you place all the standoffs under the board in the right spots? If there is one under it where there is not a hole it will ground out on the bottom of the board.

Well there are no stand offs on the board/case, so when I go to screw it down because of the plate underneath the processor the board isn't level on each side, so if I screw down each side it shorts some of the leads to the case so I basically I can only have 2 screws holding the mobo in and they're only like 2 turns tight. After doing this it turned on so everything's great? noooo..

No video appears on the screen at all, light just stays orange like nothing is connected..it does this for both the onboard video AND the graphics card. I have tested the monitor on another computer, and tested another monitor on the computer, same result. Only thing I haven't swapped out is the VGA cable, could that really be what's wrong though..ugh driving me crazy.

Edit: Now that I was paying attention to some little stuff..I just noticed - the USB mouse isn't turned on, USB keyboard isn't turned on, USB wireless adapter isn't turned on, none of the external peripherals that are connected via motherboard aren't turning on, so they aren't getting any power yet? This could also be because it hasn't gotten past the mobo loading screen where it tells me date and time reset because power was disconnected and blah blah. Or could it because of something else? The hard drive has power, CD drive has power, all fans and lights have power.

I'm just so confused and raging.

You need to have the standoffs between the case and the motherboard or you will run into major problems. You may have damaged your motherboard already but you need to put the standoffs in to see if it will work.

Like said, you need to get your standoffs under the board in the right places. Unless you have one of those cases that have risers on the tray. Hope you havent shorted the board out.

Put them under the grounded holes on the board.

Well I'll have to try to find a place that sells that size stand offs. The case came with none, neither did the motherboard.

And the computer is turning on now so it's not grounding itself anymore.

Now it's just no matter what, no video appears on the screen. It recognizes that it's plugged in..like when it's unplugged it has the video test thing going around the screen then once it's plugged in and powered on the power light turns orange but it doesn't show any picture.

I will try to find some stand offs though.

The case is what the standoffs come with. You can buy hardware kits that have standoffs in them however, along with case thumbscrews, hdd and cdrom screws.
