From my first post, my mobo died.

EVGA 512-P3-1150-TR GeForce GTS 250 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

Western Digital Caviar Blue WD3200AAKS 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

OCZ Platinum 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2P10664GK

AMD Phenom 8650 Toliman 2.3GHz Socket AM2+ 95W Triple-Core Processor Model HD8650WCGHBOX

I am wanting to get a new mobo for gaming/rendering. I would like at least 8 gigs of ram. But I don't want to have to purchase all new ram to replace the old since it isn't broken. Could somebody recommend a reliable mobo for gaming/rendering that I can put in at least 4 extra gigs of OCZ Platinum? And still run off the old(ish) processor? I can't afford to get a whole new set up.

I would get an lga 1366 mobo and up ur semi-obsolete cpu to a nice i7 920! get the x58 ud3r which is what I use and its epic! if you want to save a lil money then u can get an lga 1156 mobo and an i5-750

As long as you are not planning to crossfire in the future the ASUS M4A77D that daisymtc posted is a great board. That should work great for you.

K so I am looking at the m4a77d (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131618) and was wondering about my RAM (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227298). If I buy another 4 gigs from another brand, will I have any problems? I won't be doing this but I just thought of it as a question for the future. However, I am wondering if I bought another 4 gigs would I be able to use all 8 gigs with Windows 7 64 bit? I had tried to get 8 gigs before from Windows XP Home but it wouldn't use more than 3 or 4 gigs, out of what I put in. I know these are ram questions and should go in that section but I thought I was starting to post too many threads.

I'd take this chance to upgrade to AM3/DDR3.

The Phenom I's are not that great of cpu's. Even an Athlon II would be much better. I would sell your ram and CPU, you should get ~$120 between the two of them and buy-

Thats $250 worth of stuff, but if you sell your cpu and ram you're looking at a $130ish HUGE upgrade.

And that board is very future upgradeable..you could go to a Phenom II quad in the future once you get more money or even a hex core.

Even if you need to chince a little more, and get an Athlon II dual core, it will be stronger/faster than your Phenom-

EDIT- If you aren't opposed to getting ''open box'' items, this will save you $20 too-

I recently purchased an ASRock P55 extreme motherboard open box off newegg, it came with all the accessories anyway. This is a small chance you won't get accessories, but you should have them from your previous board anyway. I've purchased open box items twice and both times it came full retail anyway.

If you get that open box, the Athlon II, and that ram, you're looking at ~$215 including shipping. Sell your ram and CPU for $120ish, not bad for a hundred dollar upgrade.

My point was to use it as a chance to upgrade...look at it more like $120 to upgrade or $60-70 for a new board to get back to where you were.....

either way its a upgrade for him, your option would give him faster ram but the same amount, wheras the ddr2 board would give him the option of adding more ram, and as far as im concerned, ddr2 ddr3, it doesnt matter, both are bloody fast

I do want to upgrade but I don't have the money. I am just trying to get my rig back up and running. I will be building a whole new computer soon as my show gets a sponsor and then I will be back asking more questions :D

LOL, looks like you will be upgrading now afterall! Only problem is you spent a whole lot more than needed on a mobo...oh well.

Yea caught that just before I ordered. Went with the ASUS M4A785-M instead. Thanks again.

Eh, ok board. I never really like much of Asus's low end boards, even their mid range I didn't care for as I tried a 790x board a few months ago. THe main issue is horrible Vdroop because they only use a 4 pin CPU power connector. I had a gigabyte board at the same time, and it took my Phenom II 550 unlocked to a quad took 1.5125 Vcore to get 3.9ghz stable. THe same 3.9ghz took 1.575 Vcore because of the horrendous droop.

Yea I am not sure how you know what is low end and not. Also, I don't know how to OC my Phenom. I would need a walk through on that one :D

Other than that:

Everything is back up and running nicely, thanks everyone.
