Need a New Wifi router...?

We been using this router that came with our internet service "arris DG860" For almost 2 years and the range has never been that great to begin with and lately it seems to be getting worse and its time for a Upgrade.

I dont know much about these so I figure I would ask before just buying something,This is just for home use but we run a lot of things, kids face timing on ipads,TV devices streaming ,Phones, games etc. We have cable internet and get speeds like 24MBPS, I did a speed test on my tv device over wifi and was only getting like 2.5mbps a room over from my router. So im not sure if the router was bogged down because of other things,or range but I would like a new router that will really give me enough range to cover our house and keep the speeds up pretty decent. What would you recommend?

I did a quick search for a good router and see a Netgear Nighthawk was rated pretty high, also pretty pricey at $200.00 would this be something that I would need or would this be overkill for my internet and home usage? Thanks!

This one is cheaper especially if you're not gonna use 802.11AC. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833320091

If you have a large house like an upstairs you might need a repeater.

Just to let you know. I myself got a new modem and it has its own built in WIFI and router. I didn't want to use that and wanted to use my own router I have been happy with. It's flashed with a third party firmware DD-WRT. Well I have many things in that router like a SSH server. I had to go into the modem and enable bridging mode in order to use my router with the modem. Just to let you know if you buy a router you more than likely need to enable bridging mode.
