need a really small computer

I'm looking for suggestions about a really small handheld computer. I'm thinking of something along the lines of a smart phone. I have considered getting a netbook, but wondered if there was something smaller and cheaper. I am only needing it to do very basic stuff. Something else totally different that might accomplish the same thing would be a small portable battery-powered monitor. Something that I could take outside that would interface with my desktop computer, like a remote second monitor. Has anyone heard of something like this, or am I just dreaming it up?
 
I'm not sure you'll be able to find something any cheaper, but I have seen some smaller computers... There's the OQO if you can find it around, and the Fujitsu Lifebook u820. I know some regular ol PDA's did have the ability for remote desktop and such as well, but trying to view a high-res screen on a tiny 640x480 monitor is pretty difficult...
