Need Advice On A Laptop

Ok so next year I will be going to college and will be buying a laptop to use. I do not know much about computers as far as what kind brand, specs, and all the other stuff I need.

Here is a list of stuff I want/need to be able to do on it.

Access Internet
Run programs such as word, excell, ect. without any major problems.
Be able to run music on it.
Everything that goes a long with school.

I will not be playing games on the computer so I don't need one that can run them.

I have heard that I should not go through best buy but other then that I dont know what to get.

I will be able to spend around $1000 but if I can spend less that would be great. (from the info I have already gotten it seems more then enough).

What I was wondering was
1. What company should I go with?
2. How much money will I need to spend?
3. Can anyone point me to a computer that would be good?

I know its a lot but I appreciate anyone that can point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance.

Also I want to buy new.

What I recommend u to do is Research:eek: Think of it a college project. 1st goto www.pcworld.com than these site:
www.hp.com
www.dell.com

Now hp have couple of laptop after rebate the lowest is $499.99 with good processor and another is around $600 that have duo processor and capable with windows vista. I recommend u look at any laptop with duo processor, is a good start out laptop.

But when buying a laptop look at each brands name website and see if they have software and drivers support or updates. Use the internet to do ur research so when u like a certain model u can order from them or goes to the store and tell them exactly what u want. It make the store sale associate think that u know alot about laptop.:D

Use Google to learn any computer term u want to know.:)

Dell laptops and HP laptops are horrible. I would suggest, like the dude above, an Asus or Acer. I have an acer laptop and even with the low specs it has it works amazing.
