Hmm, I should really come in here more often....
But, anyhow, my laptop's spec's are in my sig. WILBUR has the automatic Windows Defender and a paid subscription to Windows Live OneCare. Supposedly the two work together and that is where the problems begin. Windows Defender does not turn on (Opening WD prompts a' Windows Defender is not turned on would you like to turn it on?' message. Pressing Yes may or may not work -closing the window may be needed- and if you close the WD window and try to reopen it again you get the SAME MESSAGE). WD also cannot perform anything except for stopping start up programs. Anything else results in an error message.
I had no problems with using only OneCare because I was also running Mozilla with Web of Trust. Unfortunately, I did contract a Trojan. OneCare saw it, notified me, and asked if I wanted to clean it. I said yes, it got rid of it, etcetera. However, it continued to find this same Trojan again and again and again. Also, every time it tried to remove the 'Trojan Downloader' is just ran forever and couldn't actually remove it. I was panicking and downloaded the new fancy 'full featured' AVG free even though it conflicts with OneCare. AVG found the file with the Trojan inside it, was unable to remove it, sent me to where it was located and I deleted it and ran CCleaner. I also ran a Virus scan on AVG and was surprised at how little time it took. When I popped open Mozilla it even scanned each website for threats and showed a checkmark if there were none.
This very nice setup for AVG has me considering scrapping OneCare despite my still five or so month subscription left. The fact that OneCare failed to get rid of the Trojan has me wondering exactly how much more it may have missed (AVG found some suspect adware and such as well that OneCare has never noticed). The fact that Defender is a piece of junk factors heavily as well.
Now, if someone can help me in fixing WD and OneCare so that they work to full capacity I will stick with them. But if not then I am fully prepared to change. I am also willing to pay for the antivirus.
So, anyhow, long winded introductions over I'm looking for an Antivirus that delivers the best protection from viruses, rootkits, worms etcetera. That's my main worry. I would prefer not to have the bloat and lag... but if necessary to protect WILBUR I can suffer through it. Do the paid versions of the free trial's have the same protection as the paid? (Like in AVG?)
I've been hearing good thing's about the Norton 2009 right now. A few websites have praised it's new set up and lack of previous issues. Kapersky is another but our family desktop has it and to me it seems rather clunky and irritating with a confusing interface... of course that could just be me not using the desktop much. Avira... erm... Aviri? I'm not sure what it's called but apparently it's free and good... does it have a better paid version? AVG is the one I really like at the moment and despite how much it costs the new 'all in one' version looks really spiffy. Um... I think BitDefender is another praised one but I hear the new one isn't much of an improvement compared to the others. Aaaand.. that's all I remember off the top of my head.
So, any suggestions, praises, shameless promotion, ideas, fixes does anyone want to add?
