Need Advice on Buying a New Laptop

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum. Must be a new site or something as I've never seen it before & I'm on all of them.

Current laptop is the Asus K55N-DB81

Anyway, I bought a laptop almost 2 years ago & I had problems with it almost from the beginning. While I thought some of the issues were Windows 8, I'm sure some of them were Asus issues too.

Since they treated me like garbage at Asus & their tech support is TERRIBLE (I wasted over a month trying to get things resolved), I will NEVER EVER buy an Asus product again. They don't believe in customer service & if you look at their BBB page, there's a RED warning I've never seen on anyone's BBB page before.

The thing is useless now & I can barely work with it.

Now onto what I need:

1. I want a company that has an office here in the US & they treat their customers well. Also an Executive Response team for when tech support isn't working.

2. I had an HP before, wasn't in love with it. My first ever laptop in '97 was Toshiba & their customer service was terrible b/c they had tech support guys manning it, but I heard that's changed. Someone mentioned this one will take Win 7 - Toshiba satelitte L50d-b but I can't find it anywhere on New Egg or Tiger Direct.

3. I do camming, so I am learning that if I have multiple sites open, there's too much lag even if I have high speeds. Even when I close them down the lag is terrible. I didn't realize that camming is the same as being a gamer.

I guess the Asus' processor is terrible & probably so is its graphics card. I can't blame them for that, as I didn't choose this laptop & at the time I wasn't camming.

Someone said I need an off board graphics card, but how do you get that for a laptop?

4. It has to be able to take Win 7. I was furious when I found out I couldn't put Win 7 on this laptop & someone who has a cousin at MS said that BILL did it on purpose. He told all the hardware manufacturers NOT to allow Win 7 on their hardware.

Don't need a ton of HD space. I have 698 GB & it's not even half full.

5. I need a built in cam, but I have an external so it doesn't have to be great.

6. I use my own mouse, but the keyboard, I'm using now has num keypad & I'm used to it, although I think they all come with that now, correct?

7. Screen size, the same as the Asus one which I think is 15.1

8. Price range - $400-500

I'm furious I have to buy a new one when I don't have the money because of Asus laptop, but I live to learn.

I appreciate all the help you can give me.

Thank you

1. Don't be blaming Asus if you didn't buy the correct laptop for what your purpose was intended for.

2. In order to install windows 7 on a machine that has windows 8 on it, you must change 2 bios settings before windows 7 install cd will even work. A. Disable secure boot. B. Enable legacy boot. So whoever told you that you couldn't doesn't know what they are talking about.

3. They do have dedicated video cards for laptops. Why do you think they are called gaming laptops?

4. The cheapest gaming laptop on Newegg that isn't refurbished is this MSI for $699, though its a low end card.

Hi all,

Hi :D
Although that is unlikely since the domain was registered in 2002 :P

While I thought some of the issues were Windows 8, I'm sure some of them were Asus issues too.

What kind of issues? It probably sounds a little forward but from the post it kind of seems like you might be creating your own issues.

3. I do camming, so I am learning that if I have multiple sites open, there's too much lag even if I have high speeds. Even when I close them down the lag is terrible. I didn't realize that camming is the same as being a gamer.

For a lot of video encoding you'll just need CPU resources. It sounds like your system may have some other user related issues if you're having high system utilization without running an intensive workload.

4. It has to be able to take Win 7. I was furious when I found out I couldn't put Win 7 on this laptop & someone who has a cousin at MS said that BILL did it on purpose. He told all the hardware manufacturers NOT to allow Win 7 on their hardware.

That sounds like a really reliable chain of information..

There are plenty of guides everywhere on downgrading bundled Windows 8 to Windows 7. You generally just need to enable legacy BIOS and then you can install Windows 7 at your leisure.

8. Price range - $400-500

I'm furious I have to buy a new one when I don't have the money because of Asus laptop, but I live to learn.

Two years is a long time to blame your bank account on a minor purchase :P

What applications do you use for streaming? Personally the A8-4500M should be suitable for most tasks and isn't antiquated to a gigantic degree.

Clearly you didn't read my post clearly, I NEVER blamed Asus for the camming issues, in fact I even stated as such. I blamed them for all the OTHER issues I had with them that had nothing to do with my work.

Win 7 - Well this is what 2 people told me, so I'm sorry if I believed them. I found it ridiculous too.

But even when I'm not camming I have serious issues with the laptop lagging, it takes forever to load, etc.

Since I'm NOT a gammer, I have no idea what anything is called, but thanks for the sarcasm buddy.

Thanks for the URL

@beers

1. Well then the site never came up on page 1 of Google, I'll be clearer in that regard.

2. Nope, I don't create my OWN issues, but thanks for blamming me. I'm not a newbie to computers.

3. Well I guess I am not as rich as you are that I can go around buying a new laptop every 1 1/2 years.

Anyway, this doesn't seem to be a very nice forum so I'll go elsewhere for my help.

All the best.

LOL, no ego here dear, but I get that your ego is causing you to tell you that I have one & that's triggering you.

Please don't respond back, I will unsubscribe from this thread since I don't need this attitude when all I came on here was for help.

All the best

Out of curiosity, what troubleshooting have you done at this point to resolve your issues?

I'm sorry you feel the need to vent your frustration that way, most experienced people don't have the problems you have been describing. There are a lot of user variables that can contribute to poor performance. Based on your original post/analysis it didn't sound like you had a particularly strong grasp on your platform.

Asus products (at least the ones I have and my friend's) are the most reliable right now (up there with Lenovo) in my experience.

What exactly are you experiencing and when? That way we might be able to target a good laptop that will fit your needs. Or better, we might fix the one you have, because apart from cheap batteries on cheap asus, I have never heard any complaints from users (apart from the occasional not working laptop that each company has).
