Need advice on correct RAM

I want to upgrade ram in a HP Pavilion a210e. It has 2 ram slots. The machine is 6-7 years old. It has 1 stick @128mb and 1 @ 256mb. Neither are dual sided. The system readout shows 352mb. The specs on the 128 stick reads DDR PC2700 CL 2.5.

I have researched and had decided to get 2gb (2 X 1gb) PC3200 DDR non-EEC, non-buffered, low density 400mhz ram. Finally I thought about looking on the hp site and they list 1gb max. (2x512mb).

I would like to hear from those of you who know RAM. Is it likely that I would benefit with more speed if I go beyond what hp states? Also, is RAM of the description I noted in the second paragraph above what I need. As best as I remember hp called for PC2100 but then maybe PC3200 was not available when this machine was new.

Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

There's other information on the chart at your link that I needed also.

If 3200 would likely back clock, would it be just as good to buy 2700?

I would be careful about adding memory to this machine. Hp says it has a maximum of 2 gb but other sites are saying max of 1gb. I would call hp and double check. The motherboard only supports pc2100 which is 266mhz. Usually pc3200 is cheaper then 2100 or 2700. But contact HP about the max memory allowed. Crucial.com is saying max of 1gb total.

Thanks for that information. Totally on my responsibility, if I were to decide to try it and the computer wouldn't boot, is it likely that I could simply remove the ram and replace it with what the specs call for and this wouldn't damage the computer. The reason I ask is because I already have the 2X1gb sticks. If you think this is not wise I will buy the spec amount.
Thanks again.
