Need advice on creating a good forum

I've purchased a domain, and I have the concept in my mind. Just bear in mind that I don't know much about this whole field, like exactly what the process is from A-Owning the domain to B-Having the site up and running.

From the little I know, I need to pay for hosting the website somewhere, and there are variables involved in this, like how complex the site will be/how much data stored.

Then, the site itself needs to be developed. Again, dependant on how complex, how professional, how many features etc.

Other than that I don't know what's involved.

Anyway, to give you an idea of what I'm looking to create, I want it to be a forum, but a professional looking one, capable of dealing with a similar amount of traffic as this forum, with certain features like an instant chat browser built in.

Apparantly it's fairly easy to build one myself even if I have no knowledge of this kinda thing. Because when you pay for the site to be hosted, there can be templates which you can just fill in. So one of my questions would be: Are these pre designed templates good enough for what I'm looking for, or really would I need to pay someone to develop/programme my website forum?

And if so, what would the cost likely be?

Also, any recommended links?

Cheers,Mike.

it's harder than you might think. me and a few friends tried it awhile back, when we finally got everything up and running, we couldn't get anybody to join. honestly that's the hardest part, finding good users.

same here, the hardest part is just getting people to come on.

I will not comment on how to get traffic but I can tell you how you can make a forum for free and with ease.

- search for a free host e.g. freebeehosting.com, Zymic.com etc. Just remember they must support some installer.
- Use the installer to install phpBB or Simple Machines Forum which costs nothing.
- After successful installation of your forum read the documentation and you are good to go.

Thats it..

I run a pretty good size cbradio forum (thequackshack), and use IPB, but it's costly.

I run my site for around $100 a year or so with hostmonster. I have really great results with them.
