Need Advice on External Hard Drive

Hi everyone.

I'd like to buy an external hard drive that is suitable for taking small files (primarily word documents and photos). What do you guys recommend? I'm looking for something inexpensive but good quality, and that maybe has extra room on it for larger files.

Btw, what's the difference between a portable hard drive and a hard drive that's not portable? Isn't externality synonymous with portability?

Thanks.

What sort of size are you looking for (in GB's)? for word documents and things you can get up to about 8GB memory sticks now, which should be plenty.

But if you want something bigger there are 2 types, you can get the full size 7,200RPM drives that are "kind of" portable, they require external power. Or you can get the 5,400 smaller drive, which is powered by USB, but is slower (not that you'll see much of a difference, apart from maybe transferring files).

I would consider external units that connect by USB to be portable and those that connect via SATA to be not so portable.
