Dear Pals,

I intend to upgrade my CPU. My current CPU specs are as follow:
- Intel Pentium 3 1.0Ghz
- 384 MB Ram
- CDRW
- Intel 82810E Graphics Controller.

My intention of upgrade is for:
- DVD RW
- Improve video card so as to play latest games such as FIFA 2005
- Firewire capability as I am interested in Audio/ Visual and Video editing etc
- Improve speed of CPU
- Improve Ram
- Any other as recommended

Can any pals recommend the type of upgrade in hardeware (recommended type and brand) that I should invest in? Thank you. :)

HI, Praetor, Ku-sama,

Thanks for the recommendation. My budget is about $500 to $800 singapore dollars, which is $500 US dollar.
may I know the difference between AMD and Intel? Are they processor, just different brand. and which is better?

Ok

I will only answer the AMD VS. INTEL matter for now. That's up to you. Both are great CPUs. What exact socket are you using for the PIII? It used to be that single-core AMD CPUs were better at gaming while INTEL's were better at multitasking. To get some decent performance increase, you may need to invest into a new motherboard, cpu, graphics card and RAM. 500 USD is a fairly tight budget for anything good.

Thanks, Jan.
I need to get a new computer mainly because of multi tasking as well as playing games such as FIFA 2005. I intend to salvage 2 items from my old computer, i.e. 52XCDRW and IEEE1394.

What other hardware can I salvage from my computer?

Can you comment on the following specs that I intend to get for myself:

Motherboard: ECS K8 HT 2000 NF4 mainboard
CPU: AMD 64 939 3000+
Harddisk: 80GB Hitachi 7200 RPM
Ram:512 MB DDRAM Kingston
Soundcard: AC97 INTG Sound
Diskdrive: 1.44 Lan
Videocard: 128MB ABIT X300 PCI-E
CDRW: "Salvage from old computer"
IEEE 1394: Salvage from old computer"
Wireless keyboard and Mouse: " Salvage from old computer"

Thanks!!!

Heya

Everything seems good. I would have a look at different offerings of Nforce4/4 Ultra motherboards. As well as that, the x300 is a rather weak card. Perhaps a 6600/6600GT or Ati X700/700 Pro would be better choices to consider. One more thing...what RAM is it? Is it DDR 400?

you can alo "salvage"your old hard disk. (at least, if you want to keep it :P )
ogh, that could sav you the monney of buying a new one

Yes, the ram is DDR400 512MB. Thanks, Jan, you have been great in answering most of my doubts. Will probably change my video card to 128MB Nvidia FX5200.
Btw, my hard disk is 20GB. Is it possible to buy another 80 GB and install together? Is this feasible?

:)

i would get a x300SE over a fx5200 ;) because the x300SE is from wat Ive seen a better card.
and yes, it is possible to install the 20Gb and a 80Gb IDE harddisc together on 1 port.

ECS mobo is not the best choice for your system as you have laid. I would suggest mobo from Asus, Abit MSI or DFI.
These mobo mfgs have mobos for about $100 that should do a better job.
If you are interested in video you may wnt to upgrade your video to the best you can get for your budget and perhaps raise the budget for the vid card, 6600GT's are around $150 now.
