need advice with wireless

hi guys i need advice this is my problem i have a toshiba laptop that have a 802.11a/b/g wireless lan and it find only 3 or 4 wireless networks around home,but the other day my cousin brought his laptop to my house and it found a lot of wireless networks maybe 10 or 12 and the funny thing is that his laptop(dell)has the same wireless lan as mine,any advice how to correct or improve the wireless search? thanks in advance guys

he may have had internet sharing on which is a computer to computer internet connection. and about the many networks i have a roomate who has a hp and another with a dell we all live in dorms and the one with a dell can pick up a wireless network 4 rooms down through brick n drywall walls and still have just enough connectivity to get online not hardcore gamin or ne thing but the hp wont even pick it up and it is like four years newer than the dell i have a wireless card in my desktop which has a external antenna and it wont even pick it up it goes to show that it is all wack lol and may depend on where the wireless card is in the computer
