Need DVD Clip Editing Help

Hey guys - I'm trying to cut some clips from a Napolean Dynamite to use to teach middle school students.

Napolean Dynamite - A study of sweetness; a study of life.

Anyway I've got a DVD-RW but I'm not sure what programs to use (preferably free) to use.

Here is what I want to do:

Play about 4 short clips (less than a minute) but have some words go over them like: Lying, Relationship, Rejection, Personal Discovery, Family Problems then a fade out.

Any help would be great.
 
I figured out how to collect the clips I want. What software could I get (for free) that would allow me to throw in some text over the clips while they play?
