Need expert's comments and help

hi everybody.

i am new to Computer Forum, and hope that you will help and cooperate with me.

I have the following problem
i have 40 GB maxtor HDD and windows xp professional was installed in my c drive. i dont know the reason why and how it get damaged and corrupted.
now that i connect my hard disk to another system to back up my files and folders. my files and folders got renamed to the following names which i would like to present to you.

2.!]Ï!]
3. ëuÞ\ı**.;Ãu
4. q@Ãe╝8


and i cant open my files and folders. they are now not accessable.
please help me and tell me how can i recover my files and folders. waiting for your kind replies.

I'd say you're probably at a dead end. Maybe some algorithm has been thrown off. Something similar has happened to me once, but I didnt worry about the data since I had a backup hard drive from like two weeks ago. What happened to me is that every file opened was corrupted or had weird characters like yours did. And music files that played had like three different songs mixed into one. Have you tried running some sort of virus scan on that? I dont think it could undo anything, but its worth a shot.

You might first try running chkdsk in Windows XP. It can fix some data corruption, but i'm not terribly hopeful that it will help. This is a really long shot, but have you set the jumpers correctly on the hard drive when you plug it into the other computer?

Professional data recovery services WILL get your data back, it all depends on whether you put the £1000's of pounds value on the data. What is it that was in the folders??
