need good codec

I have a tv tuner and I have installed some codec packs and cannot find one that will give me the good quality and small size combinations i need. Most of the tv shows that I have seen are about 175 megs for a 30 min. video. I was wondering if anyone knows what some of the most popular audio and video codecs are that will give good quality under a 1 gig per hour.

what are you using? software wise? Its not the codecs i beleive. For me theres and option of recording quality and i am using QUICK TV.

What you really need to do is invest in a new capture card that has onboard MPEG2 compression... Otherwise you'll get rather crummy results.

If you REALLY want to try with software compression, try Divx. But I'm telling you, the outcome won't look too good. Even current machines can't keep very decent quality/framerates and such without a little help...

i am using wintv2000 with a hauppauge wintvusb2 capture card. I know it is a soft pvr, but i got it for $40 and I is hard to find a farily cheap usb capture card since I have a laptop and cannot use pci. I sometimes use winavi to convert after I capture to decrease the filsize because winavi is pretty fast for conversions, but I still cannot get the filesize I want. The compression i have now sure beats uncompresses avi, at approx. 17 gigs per hour. That fills up the hd pretty fast.

Well, if you want to keep anything near that quality, you need to compress after recording... To actually compress while recording, you could probably use Dvix but the encoder quality and maybe even resolution will need to be dropped in order to keep a decent frame rate...

There are a few USB and even PCMCIA cards that have onboard compression, some for not much more than you paid($60-$100)
