Need HELP bad!

Okay, so, I am a complete beginner when it comes to all things computer.

I know a few things here and there about different components of a computer and can kind of understand the lingo, but not much more than that at all.

I really need help.

My roommate up at school was extremely impulsive one night and threw away his extremely nice Gaming PC. He built it himself like three years ago and just couldn't take the distraction anymore I guess. Well, I went into the dumpster and cleaned it off and paid him 50 bucks for everything. This is what I got:

A 27' Sceptre gaming monitor
Acoustic Authority computer speakers
And the PC....

Now, here is the problem. The PC was fine for a week or so. I let it air out a little bit, ran it with all the built in fans on, and checked all the plugs and such (this is about the extent of my maintenance). Well, after that the computer just stopped working, it turns on and everything but no matter what monitor I use, no picture.

I took it to get a diagnostic on it, we replaced the DVI to VGA adapter, checked the video card, which was working fine, and the solution that we came up with (when I see we I mean the guy working) was that my motherboard is fried.

So, here is my dilemma. I have a ASUS striker extreme motherboard in my PC right now, but I need to replace it. I called my roommate for a list of all the components, but I am still waiting for that.

What should I do?

I have been looking for a motherboard that can be used in lieu of the striker board, but I have no idea what I am looking for. I want to be able to run the computer the same as I did before it stopped working. . .

I definitely need help on this one guys.

Does the board in his computer have a diagnostic led?

Anyway I'd try reseating the RAM, if he literally threw it out, I'd be checking all hardware to make sure it's seated. I've also seen bad HDD data cables prevent the system from POSTing

I reseated everything.

I didn't notice this before, but I have that dreaded CPU INT problem. :/

And I'm not about to start tinkering with it . . .

Guessing my only solution is to get a new mobo, right?

If it were me, I would research how to do this. It would take some time, but it would be cheap and I may not need to buy any components. Searching for, buying, installing, and setting up another MB may take as long, and if it works I'd be up and running before I could get a new board working.

EDIT: looks to me like it doesn't have to be the MB.
