Need help building a new computer...

hello everyone ,
I'm new here.

right now i have a p4 3.2 ghz computer with abit 3rd eye mobo, and 4 gig ddr 2 ram.

I have the cheapest case, and the worst cooling system. two ide drives and one sata. I don't have internal optical drive, i have a usb dvd writer.

vga card is ati x300 (very crappy).

I bi- when it comes to systems, I use both pc and mac at work and home.

at first I wanted to buy a mac pro (two xenon 2.66 core duo processors, with their unique format of ram) and the main reason for switching to mac is because i'm totally in love with their OS plus the power of the system.

but now I'm thinking why don't I just upgrade my system and get Windows Vista once its out.
or maybe get a more powerful processor and a mobo?

what do you think guys?

My budget is around 2400 USD. I'll be buying two 320 sata drives too.

thanks for your help :)

thanks for the reply.
another question, mac osx is 64bit. I heard windows vista is 64bit (actually bot 32bit and 64bit are on the same disc) so will the setup ask me which version I want to install?
and if I install the 64bit version, will I still be able to run my 32bit applications?
I want the 64bit version because (if I'm not wrong) it allows me to use more of the ram for my applications (ie WinXP 64bit allows me to use 3gig of ram for the apps. I had problems with my WinXP 32bit when I tried that 3GB switch.)

thanks again :)

Why don't you try another O/S?

There are many options for you... in fact you could try with Solaris, also with Linux (Fedora Core 6 x64 is a good option), even you could ask for a free copy of solaris. So don't be caged in a Microsoft option. It will be a good O/S but you could try with any other.

thanks all for the replies :)

I have few questions, If I decide to get the Intel Core2 Extreme Processor, will I have to select different mother board?
If I have only Gigabyte, MSI, ASUS and intel mobos, which one should I choose? and why?
will I be able to use my current ram? (kingston ddr2 on p4 mobo).
when buying ram, what kind of features should I look for? like buffer and stuff.

regarding video cards, so is nvidia better than ati?

thanks all :)
