Need help buying a laptop

Hi everyone,

I am looking to buy my girlfriend a laptop. She is looking for a laptop that has a lot of space and she likes to do video editing. I don't really care too much about the hard drive space in the laptop as I can buy an external hard drive for that. I have a few questions below:

1. What kind of processor would be good for her to be able to do some video editing? They are mostly like camera video editing of events and things like that and putting slide shows of pictures together.

Should I go with AMD or Intel. Whichever processor is recommended which type also, (dual core, quad core, 8 core, etc..) model recommendations etc.

2. How much ram should I look into having in this laptop as well?

3. Are there any other factors I need to look take into consideration when purchasing the computer? Like graphics cards etc..

I am also on a budget for this laptop and I don't want to spend a whole lot of money either as I know this can get really expensive. I'm trying to get the most for my $$$.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If she is doing still photography editing this is not video editing.

But generally I would get a quad core, 8GB ram, ssd laptop with a discrete gpu and Windows 7 64 bit. Others will point you in good directions.

Quad Core CPU is a must for Video editing and if possible hold off until Intel 4th gen "i" processors come out since the intel HD 5000 gpu built into the CPU will be more then enough performance and save you some money on not buying a dedicated graphics card. I know some apple products have already announced the release of new Mac's using this CPU so it is only a matter of time before PC's start coming out with them.

You want cuda cores for video processing, not integrated.

Well right now she uses what came with her old Sony vaio. I believe it's windows movie maker. Not sure if she will want something different later or use the sane program on the new laptop.

If video editing is just a hobby and not of any professional nature, then I'd suggest you go for a laptop with higher battery backup and a decent graphics card and about 3-4 GB RAM. Why waste money on higher end stuff if you're not gonna use it?
Take a look at the Samsung range, they've got laptops with good battery life.
Dell Inspiron 15R is good too. I guess Dell would cost you around 500$.

Thanks for the info. Yes it's a hobby.

One more thing so any processor would be good? Meaning amd or intel and any number of cores will suffice?

:) you're welcome. Since you're buying a new laptop, get one with at least an Intel i3 processor, check it out, and if you think you can afford to have an i5, then you could go for it too, but then it wouldn't be put to much use. I just suggested it since it's in trend. But if you're low on budget, an i3 would be perfect for the money.

Essentially, any processor would do good since it's just normal editing with not-too-much high end stuff. You could do that stuff with a Pentium P4 lol, so don't worry about it ;).

i5 or i7, the i3 is sufficient for editing the video's using Windows movie maker but when you come to export the video especially if your aiming at exporting in a HD format I would at least go with the i5.
