im currently on the fence and need to upgrade my prescot 3.0 ht p4. my question is should i get a pentium d 925 3.0ghz 800fsb 4mb l2. for 79.99 or a dual core e2160 1.8ghz 800 fsb 1mb l2 for 84.99.. im a moderate gamer and have a 7900gs video card and my cpu just cant run crysis and the newer games coming out..i have a sli asus board and used to have a 2 sli 7900gs setup but my cpu is a bottleneck. whichever cpu i get i will be overclocking in so which will perform best while overclocked is important. im also open to any 775 socket suggestions but id rather stay around $100. thanks in advance

Does your motherboard support dual cores? Anything with an Intel 915 or 925 chipset does not.

I allways go for the chip with the higher clock speed, that way programs that dotn support both cores will still run pretty fast

i would say that the thing to get would be a dual core the ones that are a bit older will be cheaper, i would say try to spend a little more tho, a dual core around 100 might end up being slower than your 3 ghz, thats worded very bad, but if you get that 1.8, its 2 1.8's not a 3.6

I know this is what most people would say but I am recommending a C2D E8400 45nm Intel CPU.

3.0 Ghz, 1333 fsb, 6Mb cache. Cools well, overclocks well, uses little power, price = $183 which isn't bad. There are other core 2 duos available as well, but i believe the 3.0Ghz has the most bang for its buck.

Do you plan on overclocking at all?

yes i will be overclocking.. i have a asus sli motherboard im not sure of the model number but ill check when i get home..so im not sure if it will accept dual cores if not ill have to upgrade my mobo.. but im thinking the pentium d 925.. out of the 2 but im going to think about saving for a core2duo but how much better will the core 2 duo considering the running the same clock speeds.. say 3.0ghz.. i guess im asking if im going to get $100 more performance..like i said i dont use my computer a whole lot but when i do im usually playing games..and when i run crysis i can just tell that my cpu is lagging but its still playable.. an overclocked 7900gs should run that game decent right? assuming my cpu is capable..

im going to get a allendale core 2 duo and overclock it to around 3ghz.. my question is should i even bother spending the extra dough on the 2.4ghz over the 2.2 ghz.. will they both hit the same overclock wall or will the 2.4 be 200mhz faster..i would like to get the 3.0 Ghz, 1333 fsb, 6Mb cache but the problem would be finding a budget mobo because mine wont accept core 2 duos..and honestly my girlfreind would kill me i just bought a laptop lol. so i figure with a lower fsb of 800 i could get a higher oc without the mobo being the constraint..is a new power supply in order or does the allendale use less power than my prescott?
