Need help "cloning" HDD

Hi, I've just upgraded to a newer PC and want to give my Dell XPS 400 to my parents. I'm having trouble cloning their 80GB IDE HDD from a Dell Dimension 2400 to a the newer 250GB SATA HDD using a USB to SATA kit.

I've gotten everything set up and used XXClone to clone the their drive and used the option to "Make Bootable" after the cloning. I then put the drive into the XPS and it started up but just a few seconds after the the Windows XP loading screen shows up I get a blue screen. My parents want everything on their PC to be the same as it is now, so I figured this was the best course of action.

One thing I noticed after I was done using XXClone, using the DskMngmt program I see there are two partitions on the IDE HDD and only one on the SATA. Am I missing something on the new drive for it to completely boot in a different computer?

If anyone understands what I've written (sorry it's late) and knows how to go about doing this it would really be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

So is the old hard drive is from an old motherboard and the new cloned hard drive is being connected to a new motherboard?

There is a problem you are running into trying to clone this hard drive. There is certain software for each Windows operating system that is written specifically for each motherboard model. This software (at most times) will not work with another motherboard model. This is why you are getting blue screen errors.

To solve the problem a new Windows installation is going to need to be made with the new motherboard. Do you have a Windows installation disk? You will also need to get the new motherboard drivers from the manufacturer. Cloning will not work.

What is the motherboard manufacturer and model?

Ok, its an Intel with a 945P chipset, thats the only info I can find, I don't have any Windows disks or driver disks from either PC. What do you recommend I do? Again thanks.

The topic of this thread has changed slightly. What I am now doing is using the HDD with the OS for the XPS PC and uninstalling everything possible. Then cloning it to the 250GB HDD since it is only 70GB. What I now need to know is how to move all of the favorites from both Internet Explorer and FireFox to the new computer be it by usb drive or when I copy all their photos and such with the USB2SATA kit. Thanks.

I doubt what you are doing will work. Uninstalling everything will likely not fix the remaining drivers leftover in the Windows registry. You will likely still get blue screen errors.

I would contact Dell, give them the system model number and tell them you need a Windows recovery disk for your system. It will likely cost you around $25.
