Need help: Custom hp laptop>dish wifi reciever!!

Hello peeps, first post! WooT! Anyway, so heres is the jist of my spontaneous project. My buddy last year brought over his HP dv2120us laptop. He was having problems with it so he literally ripped it apart without tools for the most part lol.
I last year bought a new HP dv2718us and also ran into minor problems. But me being quite tech knew how to resolve it. BUT I always told myself as soon as my laptop dies in any way I'll turn it into a project. Since I've never gutted a laptop before.
So I gutted mine WITH tools, piece by piece down to nothing. Found out my lamp had went out, like a 10 dollar fix. So I pieced it all back together and have it running with a monitor just fine until I replace the lamp or inverter still unsure which went out.

BUT onto the project. SO I took my buddies very similar even same size scraps of a laptop and started piecing it back together salvaging what I could from it. I'm happy to say I have actually got it up and running without a power button, keyboard, LCD screen, and probably a few other missing parts.

THEN I noticed the Wifi Adapter recieves and sends a signal from the back of your screen where its hooked to two individual plates [his broken and ripped off] noticing this I realized I had an old TV Dish sitting out back of the house just wastin away. so I pulled it out and noticed the reciever has an, assuming, input output Coaxial cable hook up that would run into the house line.
So I took apart an old reciever box and gutted out a couple coaxial connectors and modded them into the back of my laptop thinking I could hook it up to the Dish allowing me to boost my Wifi signal on my laptop as needed.
Didn't do any research was just for bored fun. Anyway so now my dish is hanging outside my window, and I had hooked up my laptop to the dish, but keep getting an error;

'Cannot connect to wireless network'

So I'm curious if there is any reason why it wouldn't work so easily? Or anything I would have to do to make it work??? It would absolutely help me a lot, I live in the country without DSL and I can barely pick up a wireless signal if I set my laptop JUST right. SOOOO the idea hit me and would absolutely help me!!

I'll get some pictures to post up soon so you guys can get a visual of what i'm trying to accomplish. Thanks!!

PS: Also, the wifi connector cables that connect to the chip itself have been damaged, noticed the layers are black wire casing, to a metal ground casing i'm assuming, to another clear wire casing, then the wire itself where would of been soldered to the metal tabs in the back of the monitor.

Yeah I have done a similar project not too long ago. There is a LOT more that goes into it then you would think. Right now you are basically at square one. I am not sure what you have done so far, but from what I understand, you plugged the wire that would normally connect to your stock wifi antenna to the coaxil of the satelite dish. Well I can tell you that it will not work. There is a certain frequency that those cables and circuitry are designed to run. I am not sure what it is, but wifis is 2.4ghz. Most likely, the antenna on the satelite dish is running a filter to filter out all the frequencies that isn't used for watching TV, in a nut shell.

What you could do for cheap is to just take off the receiver on the dish, and then put your stock wifi antenna there. It will be cheap and ugly, but it will work a little bit better then without it.

Aha, yea thats what I was assuming but wasn't quite sure about. So pretty much its down to making a little aluminum can reciever? lol
Well thats kind of a buzz kill would be awsome to be able to change the allowance of frequencies on the dish. But eh. Thanks for the advice. Guess I'll just throw on some funny lookin mods to the dish then lol.

Well you can, just by pulling everything out of the dish and putting in your wifi antenna there. If you do do the "cantenna", let me know and I can help you out.
