Need help, DDR2 or DDR3???

i'm buying a new PC which requires relatively high performance (multitasking, financial and design software, not gaming).
i'm not sure to buy a DDR2 based or a DDR3 based system. i know DDR3 has better performance especially with high-end cpu, but the whole system would be much more expensive. I'm also worried about whether DDR2 can be future proofing.
please could anyone give me some advise on this? Thanks in advance.

Well if you won't a future proof computer then you will have to go with DDR3. DDR2 is being killed quickly and soon will be no more. Also make sure you get a i7 CPU or a new Phenom II AM3 CPU. You also won't to get a high quality PSU so you don't have to buy a new one every time you upgrade a new component.

DDR3 would be a better choice. And if you're not looking for something that will leave you money-less, you should go with the Phenom II. It's suited for the kind of stuff you want to do. i7's are way too expensive.

the 920 isn't that expensive for what you are given Phenom II is the cheaper route though and compete with the Core 2 Quad and Duo

I just built the system in my sig about 2 weeks ago, and this CPU absolutely flies! I'd definitely recommend the AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2Ghz. It blows away everything Intel has to offer (ALL Core2Quads - the chip the PII X4 940/955 was designed to compete with), and runs right with the newest Intel i7's for a fraction of the cost, and less heat!.
Right now I'm running mine at 3.86 Ghz, testing stabilty (all good so far)... which will blow away nearly all off-the-shelf i7's.

I'm not knocking Intel - I think they make a GREAT chip (i7 series only), I just wish they'd drop they're prices, and price their CPU's per performance, not name brand.

not %100 acurate, you forgot about the extreme edition core 2 quad q9770

on a more serious note the phenom II's are the budget choice, no way a intel core 2 extreme is worth the $1000+ price tag when you can get the i7 range and the q9770 is only better by a very small margin next to the phenom II 955

go for the phenom 955 black edition with ddr3, you will find the cpu is much cheaper than the i7 and the mobo's are much cheaper than the socket 1366 (i7)

my next build is going to be the phenom II socket am3
