Need Help Fixing Something

Hey guys,

I have an old computer running windows XP. I received an error message a couple of weeks ago stating that:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."

Well, I never received a Setup Disc with the computer so I followed some online steps to create one. I burned a bootable disc and plugged it into the computer. I then booted the computer from the cd drive.

Well, it seemed to work at first. The blue screen appeared that said "Windows Setup", and it started installing stuff in the white bar at the bottom. I waited and the thing finally said something like Launching Windows.

Then, a blue screen appeared(I don't know the name of the screen), telling me of an error.

An image of the basic screen: http://www.maximumpc.com/files/u69/BSOD_Main.png

So, I restarted the computer and followed the instructions to press "r" when the Windows Setup appeared. Well,, I hit the "r" key over the course of the whole setup installation. No recovery console appeared. I tried this multiple times. I'm not sure how to access the recovery console and get the computer rebooted.

Can someone please give me a hand with this? It would be appreciated greatly!

So what did you actually make a copy of? Was it a windows XP install cd or what? Can you link us to what you downloaded? If you are able to access recovery console then this is all you need to do. Follow resolution B on this link.

I do not have the windows xp install cd. What I used was something that was supposed to do the same thing.

This is a link to the download: http://www.mediafire.com/?ueyyzfymmig

Also when I enter Windows Setup this screen that I'm supposed to see doesn't appear as the guide you gave me said it should: At the Welcome to Setup screen press R to repair windows using recovery console.

I never saw the welcome screen. And I pressed "r" through the whole setup but it didn't do anything.

And other thoughts?

I just burned that iso to a cd and booted to it and I do get the option for recovery console. It does work. You press R at the first screen you come to.

I did the exact same thing but my computer does not give me the option to access the recovery console.

As soon as I boot to the disk I get the setup and it immediately starts installing the stuff off the disk.

I said on my first post that I did everything I was supposed too yet that screen didn't appear.

The only thing that I can think of is that when the Windows Setup first appears, it says at the bottom of the screen in a white bar where it shows the installments: "Press F6 to access....".

My problem is not with the disk but that my computer doesn't welcome me to windows setup or give me anywhere to press "r" from. Should I try doing it on safe mode?

Do not press the f6 button. Let it go, you will see files transferring at the bottom. The process will only take a minute or so depending on how fast your system is. You will see the welcome screen when the files have finished copying over.

Ok. But if I wait it says "Starting Windows". Then I get the blue screen of death and I cannot go any further.

What does it say on the bluescreen? It should give you an error code and possibly a file name that it has stopped on.
