Need help getting a video card compatible w/motherboard

Hey everyone,

I recently had a PC more or less die, so I took it in and had a newer one put together, including what the computer guy could salvage from the old PC. One of the things he thought he could use was my video card, Nvidia Geforce FX 5200. When I picked up my PC a few days later, he told me he was unable to include the video card, because it was not compatible with my motherboard. So, I went ahead and found a few programs that would tell me what motherboard I have.

HWiNFO32 tells me this:

Motherboard Model: IBM IBM
Motherboard Chipset: Intel 845G (Brookdale-G) + ...
Motherboard Slots: 3xPCI, 1xAGP

Everest Home Edition tells me this:

Motherboard Properties:
Motherboard ID: <DMI>
Motherboard Name: IBM 831523U

So, with the information I've posted here, is there a certain brand of video card I have to look for? Is it just the Nvidia Geforce FX 5200 that won't work here, or all Nvidia? I'm kind of annoyed that I'm stuck with this onboard video, so I'm looking for a little help here to guide me the right way. Thanks for your time.

It should say on the box, if not you can take a look at the slot itself, if there are two dividers in the slot then is 4X and higher, if it only have one notch as it once gap inside the connectors, then its only a 2X card or slot.

Is this to say that if the card fits properly into the slot and all the right gaps it should be compatible? Pardon my ignorance on the subject; With computers, I only know what I've learned myself on the fly. :)

That looks like a 2X 1X slot, but your card should be backward compatible. The reason why they put in an extra gap within the slot is to stop people sticking 2X and 1X AGP cards into a 4X or 8X slot because the voltages used are different.

Its a 4-8X slot, if it was a 1-2X slot the grove would be in the front of the slot, pretty sure with that chipset it will only run 4X though!

^ The FX 5200 was my own card from another PC.

Anyways, I tried putting the FX 5200 in and all I ended up with was a black screen. I heard Windows load, but had no picture. In the past, all I've had to do was put the card in the slot, and make sure the monitor was plugged into the right card. But this time I got no picture. Is there something else I have to do this time, or maybe is this card just not supposed to work here like the guy said?

It should work, that board might not have a auto setting for the onboard video, you might need to disable your onboard in the bios or change it to look for your AGP slot instead of onboard when booting.

I don't get this. I go into my BIOS and find video settings, and the only two options I'm able to select from are PCI and integrated. I'd say that's pretty clearly an AGP slot in the picture I attached upthread, so why aren't I able to use it?

Yeah, the AGP slot is just an extended PCI slot design specifically for graphics, so set it to read a PCI card first, basically you don't want your integrated to be the first video device your motherboard reads.
