Okay I have a Sony desktop that I use. The hard drive crashed on it. I want to get the computer back up and running for a can give it to my roomate. I bought a new hard drive that matched the factor specs. Is there a way to get a copy of windows to put on it since I did buy the computer. I really don't want buy a full version. What are my options. Thanks guys.

If it crashed but you can boot it then get Norton Ghost and transfer it. Otherwise reformat the existing drive in the cmputer and give it to him. I would reformat the whole hard drive because of the personal data you could have stored on that computer. You could be facing identity theft if you leave your hard drive unformatted...

does the computer have a product key on it somewhere. if so you should be able to use a matching windows xp disc to install windows and use that product key. therefor the instillation would be legal and it would save you buying a copy. If you don't have a product key that isn't being used on something else i'm afraid the only legal way to reinstall windows would be to buy another copy. You could always put something like ubuntu on there.
