I have a laptop, a Compaq Presario v5000. I recently cracked the screen and cannot view any information. I desperately need to get some photos and other documents off of the hard drive. Someone recommended that I order online a 2.5" hard drive enclosure. I did, received it today, but when I went to put my hard drive in, the plugs don't fit each other. I am so confused, I did a search online and this size is "standard" for a laptop. Am I missing something???? Thanks!

there are more things to consider when putting a hard drive in an external enclosure like is it a sata or ide disk? which is the connector/cable. ide is flat and wide sata is smaller and doesn't have little pins like ide. Which one do you have? check the disk and enclosure

ok now if you want to put it on an external enclosure it also needs to be ide.
or you can get a ide to sata converter if you can find it.

Me thinks you have not taken the adapter for the laptop off the HD.

Its a piece of plastic,,you simply pull it off. Then the pins will be fully exposed and you can marry them to the external box.
