Need help installing video card

I just installed a GeForce 9600GT on my Dell Inspiron 530, and I'm having some trouble. I disabled the video drivers beforehand (which made my resolution all weird) and inserted the card. There are three cables that came with the card, one of which allows me to connect my monitor to the card itself, but when I do this the computer comes up in "power save mode" and won't start. I don't know where any of the other cables go, but when I start my computer with the monitor cord attached to my computer as normal and run the driver CD it says I do not have any hardware with which the software is available.

Do I need to use these cables, or does the card just click into the PCI-e slot and not need anything else? Thanks for your time.

First off if you remove the onboard cards drivers then you would expect your screen resolution to "get all wierd" as you put it. Does your card require a 6 or 8 pin power connector on the card itself? You also may need to select the video card in the bios. Many times you have a choice in the BIOS of on-board or PCI-E in your case. If you still can't get it to work take it to a trusted local repair shop.
