Need help justifying buying phenom 9950/phenom 2 920

I am currently running;

4870 EAH 1 gb
m2ne-sli motherboard
AMD 6000+
4gb ddr2

And have been looking at upgrading my motherboard and buying either a phenom 9950 or a phenom 2 920

Can someone just give me a rough idea of the performance increase i'll be looking at with either? Even with the 4870 games can get a bit choppy (mirrors edge does and crysis) and i do a heck of alot of multi tasking (u know like have wow in one corner, video in another while browsing the net and talking on msn)

Am i looking at like twice as fast a processor? or slight increases, or no increase in games but some in multi tasking, etc etc cheers in advance
 
I,m not going to help you justify buying it, thats your decision. Both are better than the X2 6000. How much better they are depends on the game and what else you use the computer for.

Between the two the Phenom II 920 is a better processor, faster clock for clock and overclocks a hell of a lot better.
 
well it's a toss up between this and a powerfc for my car, both equally useless really but both paid for by the aussie governments $1k one time payout thing

But yeh mainly just use the PC for multitasking (and the 6000+ does a good job there), but am unsure what if anything besides the CPU is holding my system back at the moment.. the 4870 is a top of the range card and it's still laggy sometimes so i blame the cpu, i suppose i could spend the $ going double 4870 as well.. but that def wouldnt help my multitasking i gess
 
Id wait till more games handle quad-cores before buying. You should be pretty comfy as of right now with most games out and most coming out. X2 6000+ is a good chip.

Id save the cash for a few months then upgrade your PC. I went from a X2 4400+ 2.3ghz to a Q6600 3.2ghz so the jump was not only worth the cash BUT it was the same price as the dual-core I wanted too.

Smart buying is the thing to do with PC parts. I wont have to upgrade my processor till at least next year.

ahh ok, yeh that sounds fair enough, not worth my while doing it really then, i had heard the same thing at some stage about the technology not being fully implemented yet, meanwhile i'll try a new soundcard or something to fix the lag, i'm using a sound blaster like 6.1 i think from the late 90's, might be chewing frames up, cheers
