In case you haven't found a solution yet...

1) I live in Canada, so I visit websites like NCIX, Newegg, Tigerdirect, Amazon, Canadacomputers and such. Mainly, you need: Computer Case, CPU, Power Supply Unit, Motherboard, RAM Cards, CD/DVD Drive, Hard Drive/Solid State Drive, Graphics Card, + Operating System, Mouse, Keyboard, etc...

2) For Motherboard to CPU, CPUs like i5-3570K model specifies which "socket" it will fit into. For example, ASUS P8Z77-LK V will support LGA 1155 CPU slot, which is what i5-3570K CPU is suitable for. So look for those kind of support for slots, and make sure the CPU you're buying, you need to know what their socket is.

3) $550, you can go with either AMD or Intel, but if it's just for gaming, AMD will just do fine. Try searching:

AMD FX Series or the Phenom II ~945 CPU
GPU of maybe Radeon HD 6850
PSU of Watts greater than approximately 550 (Corsair, OCZ, etc)
As far as the motherboards are concerned, I hope other experts can guide you

Why don't you go ahead and pick parts that you're interested in and let us know how it goes. It may be easier to tell us what you've already picked and correct it from there.

*I've used Phenom II before with Radeon 6950, runs most games very smooth (not necessarily ultra high setting but does its job)

This is NOT my build, but it looks promising:

butremor's "Moar pew pew pew!" build
Processor: AMD A10-5800K Trinity 3.8GHz (129.99$)
Motherboard: ASRock FM2A85X Extreme6 (99.99$)
RAM: G.SKILL Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1866 (44.99)
Graphics Card: SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 6670 1GB [Crossfire With APU] (64.99$)
Hard Drive: WD Black WD5003AZEX 500GB (69.99$)
Case: NZXT Source 210 Elite Black (49.99$)
Power Supply: SeaSonic S12II 520 Bronze 520W (77.99$)
DVD Burner: SAMSUNG DVD Burner (20.99$)

Total: 554.92

If your using a video card there is no reason to go with a APU and socket FM2 over a FX and socket AM3+. For close to same amount of money you could get a Gigabyte GA 970A UD3 and a FX 6300.
