first off I have a main desktop computer I use at home, I am not able to get any kind of internet but dial up in the area that I am in .

My aunt, which is about 20 minutes away from me has cable internet , the router ect. and i always download songs, movies and large files at her house, and I thought instead of wasting time and dvd making data discs from her house and then putting them on my computer, that I would buy a laptop computer so i can download videos, files, music, home theater trailers and ect. to it then just have it on my laptop and use the lapto for all my files like that until I can dispactch all the information lol .

so bassically , how much am i looking at a laptop that can do this.

I also need to be able to send information like whole dvds back and forth to my desktop to a laptop

will a simple laptop from wal mart work fine for what Im needing it to do , Im not wanting the best , but im not wanting dirt slow piece of junk either, I would just like to be able to do my stuff at her house and connecdt her fast speed to my laptop

i guess I need to be asking if this is possible, cause im not even sure that I can hook up a laptop to her cable internet.

if so can you guys tell me what I atleast need to look for on a laptop , as far as memory , speed, ect.

Basicly, any new laptop out there on the market would be fine. Just make sure it has 512mb ram, and a 40gb+ hard drive. The processors arent to big of a deal for a laptop. 1.6ghz+ would be fine

so is it possible to do what im wanting to do ?

I mean , can I hook it up to her internet and unhook her computer and then just everything go through mine, is there something that I need to make sure that is on the labtop to do this. I dont necissarly have to have a dvd drive or dvd burner on the labtop but can i get one if i want to , or is it possible to transfer big files like this to and from the laptop

yea its possible, if u have xp on both computers you can just hook them up threw a crossover cable, and basicly drag and drop files.

well I was wanting to get it to where, I could hook her internet up throuh the laptop and then when im done nothing messing up her history and favorites and all those log s, because she does alot of stuff on the net to do with her school and if its possible that would be another plus of having the laptop , so i dont mess up her things.

yea that wouldnt do anything with her history or favorites at all, if thats what you mean.... If you do get a laptop let us know

well i probably will , cause i like the idea of me still having MY OWN compuer and still getting to use fast internet somewhere, it sjust too much work to have to burn data disc after data disc everytime I go there to download the few things i get to the times im there, its just a waste of discs,

so whatever I do on the laptop while hooked to her router or cable internet, will not show up on her computer at all when its hooked back up ?

Maybe one of you could find a link somwhere of a decent laptop that will be ok and not too slow for what im wanting to do with it , like i said , Im not wanting a crapy one , im just saying that I dont have to have the best.

im going to look at walmart.com here in a few minutes, though I dont really like buying things from there as they are too large, id rather buy it from someone more dependable

Yup any current laptop could serve this purpose. It's up to you to decide what you want. If you want something cheap, or more up to par. Did you just want bare minimum? And then there's many other preferences, like widescreen, normal ratio screen, glossy or matte. In other words, you can go to your local computer shop and take a glance at what features you may like or may need. You may even want more portability and less power or vice versa. Another solution to your dilemna is get a big thumbdrive to transfer your files.

i guess ill go walmart

I guess i wil go walmart, since if i dont like it after I get it , they have no problem in my area with returns as long as you have the reciept,

they had one for 600 750 and 1000 , they 750 computer had a 80 gb hard drive i think

only thing i didnt like about them is tthat the tops are silver instead of black , but oh well

what kind of cables do i need to get to hook up to my aunts computer, just her phone cord ?

Does she have a router? Are there extra ports on her modem? If so, you'll just have to get a network cable (aka Cat5 cable, Lan cable). If not, then ask if you can disconnect the cable from her computer and plug into yours so you can download.
