Need help on upgrades!

I'm looking into upgrading a few components of my computer to improve performance, I'm not looking to get parts that can run Games like WoW at Ultra with 60 fps. I need something that's low priced, and can run games without being at 9 fps on low settings.

Now with that I have A few questions:

- What parts do I need that are compatible with my current rig, as in what should I look for? (Specs will be below).
- Any specific tools needed to install? (Besides screwdrivers and such)
- Also, how do I know what parts are compatible with other parts (Such as, if I have a Processor from one company, and a Motherboard from another, how do I know if they'll work together, or even fit for that matter?)

Computer Specs:
Mainboard : OEM_MB IVY8
Chipset : nVidia 6100V
Processor : AMD Athlon 64 LE 1640 @ 2700 MHz
Physical Memory : 3072 MB
Video Card : NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430
Hard Disk : ST325031 (250 GB)
DVD-Rom Drive : TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-H653Q SCSI CdRom Device
Monitor Type : LG Electronics W1952 - 19 inches
Operating System : Windows Vista (TM) Home Premium Home Edition 6.00.6002 Service Pack 2
DirectX : Version 11.00
Windows Performance Index : 3.0

It's a 2008* (I think) Compaq Presario SR5605f

tl;dr need cheep computer parts that will run around fair settings on games

Cheers,

you will need at least a video card, and thus PSU upgrade to get games functioning at a fair setting on that system. Try a GTS250 or GTS450 (HD5670/6670), and grab a 500 Watt PSU from a reliable company like corsair or seasonic or silverstone.

CPU wise, you can upgrade to a dual core Athlon 64 x2 4800 at highest, and are on a AM2 socket, so maybe could upgrade higher, but doubtful, as HP (compaq) sucks with their BIOS upgrade policy.

for what you want tou can deal on a corsair cx430 and a hd 5670, since it recomends a 400w you will be fine, and that will end up around ~100-120 before mail-in-rebates on newegg.com.

no where in his post does he say he wants to run BF3 on it. He says he wants to play some games at something better than 9FPS (which is playable as long as its stable).

2nd: It has a PCI-e x16 slot. He can use a GTX590 if he wants to, and the minimum requirements for processor on BF3 is a core 2 duo @ 2.0Ghz. A Athlon 64 x2 4800+ will walk all over a C2D t7300.
Scores @ passmark are 1269 for 4800+ and 1152 for t7300

im just using bfs as an example for newer games, but yeah it might play, just not on good graphics, but yeah its possible to egt a decent framerate on all low i guess

the heaviest thing in graphics level is the GPU.
If he has a good GPU he will be able to play on medium or high. Hell, BC2 will play @ 25 FPS on a GT520 on high. Thats using a i3 @ 2.53 ghz. And using the same card on an i5-580m it only went up to an amazing 25 FPS.

your not making sense man. Get a clue.

i am making sense, i just dont like playing games on lower graphics settings and below around 30 fps, its just personal preference of what is and isnt playable, and he didn specifically say what to him was playable, he just said not 9 fps on low, which could have been an exaggeration or maybe he just wants 10 fps or better

IMO its highly doubtful unless you pretty much build a new computer i doubt you could upgrade that to even play bf3 on all low settings
you are not making sense. High are good graphics. Most of the game isnt being processed on the Proocessor, but rather the GPU. Even a GTs450 will play pretty much anything short of crysis @ 30FPS with no AA or AF. IF he were to ramp it up to a GTX580 or HD6950, he would be able to play anything out there, @ max with 16AF and max AA.
