Need help picking out a new laptop

Hello, everyone! I will be starting college next year, and I need a new laptop. I will be using it for not only taking notes, presentations, etc., but also for computer gaming (MMORPG's mostly). I have been told that laptops do not run games very well, but I figure if I put enough money into it, it will do just fine.

One of my biggest concerns is battery life. I may have to use it for hours at a time, so would I need to buy multiple batteries or what? I have always been a desktop guy and have thus never owned a laptop computer of my own.

I was thinking about just going with the Alienware M17X as it looked alright to me, but I am not a computer guru. I obviously then will not be building my own, so I would like to either buy a pre-made computer from the manufacturer or customize one from a manufacturer's website.

My budget is around $1,800. Thank you all for your time and knowledge in advance!

Just go to any store Best Buy comes to mind, check the laptops out and buy one. You will be happy.:)

Honestly, with that sort of budget, I would consider mac's.

Mac's are Ok but Apple over prices their products, and try's hard to control how their used and what hardware they will except.
If you are into graphic stuff they are neat. But for what many want they are just not the right system.
