HELP

now when i turn on my computer, it tells me that i have an invalid system disk and to press any key after replacing. there is no disk, and it still pops up! what do i do?

Have you tried doing anything since you were advised on partitioning tools on the other thread? Or did this error come out suddenly without having tried anything with the existing partitions?
 
Check your boot order, be sure the primary HD is set first. If that's alright, boot to your windows disk and run the Windows Repair option.

There is no "Norton Magic". I assume you mean Partition Magic? As long a you didn't actually mess with the partitions, that shouldn't harm anything.
 
Does that matter anymore? Haha ;) No, the repair option won't. As long as you don't format it, all the data should be retained.
 
Ok, first off please calm down, if someone can help they will. :)

Secondly, did you check the boot order in your BIOS? That's what happens sometimes when you don't have the boot order set properly.
 
If the mbr was effected the first thing to try before any repair install would be to boot upto the recovery console with the XP installation disk and run the "Fixboot" and "Fixmbr" commands there. That should correct any "goobers" you made when running the shareware.

When you asked if there was any free program available for correcting the 10gb dilemna you didn't listen to the advice on the free Linux partitioning tool did you? You rushed ahead and put yourself in a mess. The repair install is only a last resort if the boot information and mbr can't be restored or rewritten.
 
I believe that you can also activate an automated recovery if you hit R or something while all those files are loading in the Windows set-up screen... (it should say briefly along the bottom what to press when...)
 
Vista is the one now where you have a menu of options for automatic repair when you boot up with the installation disk. Either using fixboot and fixmbr commands for the mbr or manually expending replacements for missing or damaged system files would be the other thing.

The repair install is carried out when hitting the enter to install now option and finding the option to repair the current instead of deleting it for a new one. But there are times when that option won't be there to use and a fresh copy has to go on? "just lovely! :rolleyes: "

With Vista here's a switch your current Windows, DocumentssandSettings, and Program files directories are all packed into a "Windows.old" folder now even if reinstalling Vista itself. Once you grab everything you want out of that you simply send it on it's way to the recycle bin.
