need help replacing my dinosaur

This is my first post so please be gentle.
The last time I built a computer a dual processor 800mhz amd athlon was the cream of the crop and thats what I have now with a 50gig hdd. I think I was 16? I can't even remember what kind of video card I have and 56k modems had just come out. This thing has survived 2 mobo crashes, 4 burned up psu's, 5 system restores, 2 burned up monitors, one total hdd crash, win95, win98, ME, back to 98(i think we all know why), and finally xp pro.

So now I'm ready to get another computer, monitor, keyboard, the whole enchilada. Just one problem...everything's changed. I haven't decided if I want to build a PC or just buy an iMac.

What I currently do on my computer is: Use office 2004 pro, dabble in photoshop, surf the internet...alot, and play cheap games that aren't multiplayer.

What I want to do on my new computer is: Keep using office pro, get better at photoshop, start dabbling in music/video editing, and have the ability to start playing decent games again. I don't need the highest quality, full cinematic gaming experience. I just want to have a fun gaming experience.

What I don't want is the maintenence nightmare I've had to deal with on this freaking thing ever since ME came out. I'm tired of fixing problems like with adobe and IE and every once in a while I can't office to open all the way.

Remember, I need suggestions on everything(monitors, case, etc.) and I would like to try to keep it around $3000. I'm open to any and all opinions. I appreciate any and all help.

I'd go with a stegasourus, they're pretty reliable. Or maybe a pteryldactyl, but make sure you get the Triassic, not the Jurassic. I think Newegg has a good deal on them now.

*ahem*

In all seriousness, with what you are wanting to do, you could go with a $400 - $600 build. $3000 gets to the point where you are making needless upgrades just to spend the money. $3000 can dominate pretty much any game out there. For you, I wouldn't spend over $800-$1000, for a nice machine.

3000? For what your asking $1000 would pay for a great build, unless you just want to spend money. I'll make a list....

edit: ^^^^^^^^^^ beat me to it.....

Well, it has been a while. That last build I did was over $2500 and that didn't even include the CRT I'm still using.

You can buy a 17" CRT at an old shop for about $5 now.

I fail to see how that help. ;) But please enlighten me.

And do you need a OS also?

It doesn't help, per se, I said it only because he implied that his CRT cost a decent chunk of money, and as has been out of touch for so long, I figured it would interest him to know that today it is next to worthless.

Why is it that everyone seems to be picking a fight now whenever I post anything?

It's fine. I was just upset from someone else... turns out he was right, so I'm the ass here. Anyway... back on topic.

If you must have another DVD drive, why not knock it up to a burner too, for $10 more? Then, if one goes out, you got a spare. Not much when the system is $1200.

I only added it in because it was part of the original list. I was curious to see how close to the $1000 mark it got. I'd still need an OS, protection software, backup software, etc etc. Basically, I'm starting from scratch. I still use a ZIP drive for god's sake.
