my brother has a hp desktop with a nvidia geforce fx5700le (sad i know) and a couple days ago it failed. just random colors will come up when the monitor is plugged into the video card and when plugged into the integrated video on the motherboard, nothing shows up on the screen during startup and after a while, the desktop comes up without the taskbar. whenever I try to open any window it doesnt show up at all. the video card is trash how can I just get it back to working normal again with the onboard graphics?

The onboard may not support the monitor being used. I found that out fast with an old Dell iwith onboard and a Phillips 15" crt. No picture seen despite having a clean install of video drivers from the support working with the Dell crt there.

With the distortion, lack of taskbar, and inability to open windows that sounds more like drivers need to be reinstalled for that model card. Corrupted or missing display driver will cause a number of problems where you simply have to search for any available at omegadrivers.net or guru3d.com for the old AGP model there.

Fortunately nvidia.com still sees an update that lists models for XP all the way upto the 8800s at http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_169.21_whql.html

try running windows (I assume that's what OS you're using) in safe mode. I would check the drivers to see if they're working. reply back if you need help with that. try downloading the newest, or use the ones on the CD if you find that the drivers are bad. you can also switch to the onboard by going to the device manager once in safe mode.
if you cannot even boot into safe mode at all, I would check the OS.

well actualy it is pci
and he had been running off the onboard graphics for years and he just added this on not too long ago.
its acrap card but its cheap and it allowed him to play more games.

Gaming will often see drivers knocked out plus newer games expect the latest if they connect online like the Steam game engine does. No picture seen on the onboard suggests checking to see if the PCI/onboard was switched to PCI there in the bios or simply saw the onboard option disabled.

how do i check the drivers?

when booting up off the onboard graphics, there isn't even a signal to the monitor until the desktop comes up. how can I get into safe mode?

would it be smart just to take out the graphics card? would that fix this?

hmmm... does it show the BIOS? if it doesnt then safemode might be a problem. if you can get into bios then check and make sure you have the video display set to onboard over auto or PCI. :) that might solve the problem right there for switching to the onboard, and loading into safemode.

To use a Safe Boot option, follow these steps:
1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when the Boot Menu appears.
2. Select an option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
3. When the Boot menu appears again, and the words "Safe Mode" appear in blue at the bottom, select the installation that you want to start, and then press ENTER.

That should help with getting into safemode :)

Don't press the F8 key until the post tests are just about complete since many boards include a boot device menu for selecting the drive to boot from. Usually that option is seen next to the press DEL now to enter bios setup.

If the onboard is seeing a driver issue the default vga drivers in Windows would be taking over for the desktop to appear. Removing the FX5700LE card won't help find out if the card went bad or a fresh install of drivers is needed.

Another thing to look at besides onboard or the card and how the bios settings are is the monitor itself. Crts have a shorter life span then lcd displays averaging 10-15khrs. while lcds can see from 24,000 upto 50,000hrs. of total use at times. That could be on the way out explaining why the delay is seen for the desktop to appear as well as the color distortions.

the monitor is fine, I tried it on my computer. when I boot it up plugged into the onboard i get nothing until WHAM theres the desktop. I Tried booting up pressing F8 and nothin happened. the card is a pos anyway so would just taking it out enable me to use the onboard graphics normally?

Once removed you simply make sure the onboard is enabled in the bios. The onboard could be waning there if it is now taking that long to see something come up onscreen.

Once the card is out keep pressing the DEL key to enter the bios or the pause/break to halt the loading of Windows to see if anything then comes up before Windows starts to load. If you then see a display of the halted startup come up you know that the onboard is failing from wear and age there. If nothing is seen after a few minutes you will need the card or a new one for the main display.

With the card in- boot and go into the bios- find where you set for what video source it checkes for first and set it to onboard- shut down- take the card out- hook your monitor up to the onboard- reboot and see if the bios shows up now.
