Need Help Setting up Modem/Router

Last month I signed up with Shaw and I now get Internet/phone/cable from them. Current speeds are slower then what i signed up for, but was told because of high development around my area in which is affecting my speeds.

Anyway, on to my point, they gave me this Modem/router:

It's a SMC gateway. If you notice on the back, it has a USB port for external hard drive storage. I want to connect my external hard drive to this and use it as a storage point among all devices that connect to this network. When i try to do this, it does not recognize it.

I contacted my service provider and they tell me that in the future firmware updates, this should be fixed. I tried looking up firmware updates (all over the web and SMC site) and could not find any.

Does anyone have advice?
 
You are at there mercy and will have to wait until they provide a firmware update activating that port. This is done all the time on different things. Cable and satellite receivers are like this all the time.
 
Like i said, you are at there mercy with the update. I doubt you will see one at SMC's website as support is given by your provider. They will have to send out the update.
 
Do you know if this will be automatic? Not needing me to call in and keep checking, or the exact opposite?

Yeah, on the SMC website, all they have is a Manual and datasheet, no firmware updates.
 
Most likely your provider will give you the update when they feel like it, I don't think SMC will have any input on it. SMC may make the product but its your provider that handles all support for it, including firmware updates. If you are wanting that option available to you now, you may have to look to a different modem/router.

I used to have comcast for a cable provider and was wanting one of the features of the cable box I had but comcast said it wasn't available yet until a firmware upgrade by them, never got it and switched to Dish network.
