need help to get files of old hard drive

hello
just recently a desktop computer i owned died and was unabal to be fixed.
it had a 1tb hard drive in it i have tried to get some files off the hard drive but when pluged in to another old computer windows xp wont work. it wants to go on to the internet to check if windows is legal but when the 3G internet usb pluged in it does not see the device.
is there some way to get these files by going around that security check when you log on to windows

When you plug it in to another computer, plug it in as a data drive, not a boot drive. Boot from the main drive in the 2nd computer. All you want to do is copy some files off the drive so there is no need to boot from it.
